INTERGEO– the world's leading trade fair for geodesy, geoinformation and land management, 2010, Cologne
Karlsruhe/Cologne, 31 August 2010. INTERGEO 2009, the world's leading trade fair for geodesy, geoinformation and land management, attracted more than 475 exhibiting companies from 30 countries and over 16,000 visitors, 22 percent of whom were from abroad. INTERGEO is thus not only the fulcrum for everyone involved in the core disciplines it represents, it is also a magnet for companies and institutions from countless related disciplines. The 16th staging of this international event will take place at the Kölnmesse exhibition centre in Cologne from 5 to 7 October, 2010. If 2009 is anything to go by, there is no doubt that “Geo is in!” – on a global scale. Companies and institutions from 30 countries presented industry innovations and once again highlighted the areas in which geoinformation is now indispensable. In the real estate and banking sector, and in the areas of telecommunications, insurance and municipal facilities, more and more branches of industry are accessing information from the geo sector – a global trend which is on the up. This trend is also reflected in the visitor statistics from last year: 22 percent of trade fair visitors from 54 countries travelled from abroad to the international congress trade fair in Karlsruhe to gather information, exchange ideas, make new contacts, renew existing ones and make purchase decisions. INTERGEO 2010: Cooling off: Towns and cities need a break from the heat
Karlsruhe, 25 August 2010. Property valuation has an important role in the real estate industry. It ultimately provides security for financing and is also of major importance in ensuring transparency and security for the economy, law and administration. The recent ruling by the German Federal Finance Court on land tax, which ruled that current taxation using long-outdated values from the last century may even be unconstitutional, could create further requirements for appraisal committees in terms of property values. Financial policy needs to overhaul practices for determining land tax. "The property sector is currently causing quite a stir, and INTERGEO in Cologne will be no exception. This is an area that will be given due consideration at the congress entitled 'Property valuation in 2020'," says Olaf Freier, Managing Director of HINTE and project manager for INTERGEO, which will make the Kölnmesse Exhibition Centre a focal point for the international geodesy, geoinformation and land management sectors.

INTERGEO 2010: Cooling off: Towns and cities need a break from the heat
Karlsruhe, 21 July 2010. By the middle of the month it was already looking like July 2010 was set to be Germany's hottest July since records began. In towns and cities in particular, it has stopped cooling down overnight, with tropical temperatures of over 25 degrees Celsius virtually ruling out a good night's sleep. The extra strain such conditions place on the human body has also led to a 50 percent increase in deaths. Climate researchers are already talking about an “invisible natural disaster”. In an interview with ZDFonline, climatologist Prof. Wilfried Endlicher described how significant the phenomenon of the “urban heat island” can become during summer heatwaves. “On days when there is little cloud, the temperature in Berlin, for example, can be between ten and eleven degrees Celsius higher than in the surrounding countryside. Averaged out over the year, the difference is usually around three degrees – on hot summer nights it can be more than three times that.” Prof. Endlicher believes that towns and cities need to help lower the temperature with long-term building strategies such as harnessing shade from parks and avenues and using specific arrangements of open spaces. “A network of cold air corridors can protect a city centre from overheating and intelligent urban planning can prevent building on these 'air ways'. Towns and cities that have focused on real estate construction are now suffering from a lack of air,” confirms Prof. Martina Klärle, Professor for Land Management at Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences.

INTERGEO preview: The boundaries between disciplines need to be stretched for the sake of environmental protection – environmental information a currency for environmental protection – leading world trade fair INTERGEO the driving force for a "connected community"
Karlsruhe/Cologne, 17 June 2010. Participants at the fifth INTERGEO preview all agreed that the geo disciplines need to be integrated more closely in the future in order to promote environmental protection. At the event in Cologne, Prof. Greve, Executive Director of the Department of Geography at the University of Bonn, highlighted environmental information as "the currency of environmental policy, without which environmental protection measures cannot be implemented in the long term". more
INTERGEO 2010: 3 A model opens up new possibilities for the municipal sector
Karlsruhe, 7 June 2010. INTERGEO is sending out an upbeat message to cities and local authorities that are feeling the pinch financially. The world’s largest conference trade fair for geodesy, geoinformation and land management is presenting a whole raft of new opportunities and solutions for optimising and improving administrative processes. "Targeted use of GIS in modern administration means that financial resources invested in collecting and maintaining municipal data can be repaid with interest. It helps ensure local authorities perform their duties on schedule, more accurately and cost-effectively and, ultimately, in a more citizen-friendly way," says Olaf Freier, CEO and project manager of HINTE GmbH, which organises INTERGEO. The presentation of opportunities and offerings for the public sector will play a more important role than ever before at INTERGEO, the leading world trade fair and conference, which will be held in Cologne from 5 to 7 October 2010. more
INTERGEO 2010: Cloud of volcanic ash puts geo experts in the spotlight
Karlsruhe, 22 April 2010. For days now, everyone has been talking about the cloud of ash from Icelandic volcano Eyjafjallajökull and its impact on air traffic. “Surveyors now need to add the scenario of a volcanic eruption in Europe to their risk and disaster management models,” says Hagen Graeff, Chief Representative of DVW gGmbH, which is dealing with content-related issues for INTERGEO on 5 to 7 October 2010 in Cologne. Graeff expects the matter to be on the agenda at the world's largest conference trade fair for geodesy, geoinformation and land management – “alongside the safety of construction work for Cologne's underground system and the recent landslides in Brazil or the South Tyrol.” more
